By this point, it’s clear that artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay and will have a huge impact on our lives. But what isn’t always clear is how it impacts YOU – more specifically, if you’re using AI for copywriting.
So here I’ll address questions like:
Let’s dive in.
AI mimics human intelligence to perform tasks. From self-driving cars to customer service chats, AI has interwoven itself into countless areas of our day-to-day lives.
In the marketing realm, AI has most recently taken the copywriting world by storm. Users can give writing prompts or ask targeted questions to AI platforms. And BAM, in seconds the AI platform delivers copy for blogs, websites, social captions, and more.
Leaning into AI for copywriting of course comes with many pros and cons – here’s some to consider when using AI writing tools.
1. AI writing tools can help you write content faster.
AI writing tools are wicked fast and can produce content in significantly less time than human writers. Researching and writing a 1,000+ word blog can take a full day. Whereas, an AI tool can produce a 1,000-word blog or article in under a minute. Talk about efficiency, am I right?
For the record, a real human is writing this blog so don’t @ me if you’re here to argue about AI for copywriting.
2. AI writing tools can save your business money.
Using AI writing tools can save businesses money. Copywriting is a learned skill for humans, so as a business you can expect to shell out $$$ for quality writing. The cost of copywriting of course varies depending on the writer’s experience, their niche, and the project detail. Yet, the price tag for a human writer is almost always higher than a monthly subscription cost for an AI writing tool.
3. AI writing tools don’t run into writer’s block.
If you’ve ever sat down to write a long article or even an email, you know the words don’t always flow naturally. AI writing tools are enormously helpful for writers to get ideas and outlines for marketing content.
1. AI writing tools need a LOT of fact-checking for content.
For companies that use AI platforms to write long-form articles or blogs, be prepared to validate a lot of details and even correct information.
Relying solely on AI tools for writing can be also risky for organizations with strict compliance standards. In these instances, producing accurate information is vital to remain compliant and maintain a strong reputation.
Furthermore, many AI tools only incorporate data and statistics from the last two years into content pieces. Many companies require statistics from the last year for all newly published copy. This is also an important consideration for companies using AI to write evergreen content.
2. AI writing tools don’t emulate human emotion.
The goal of many marketing content pieces is to engage potential customers. Without real, relatable language, doing this is nearly impossible.
Additionally, because AI writing tools don’t evoke human emotion, these platforms typically don’t accurately reflect your brand or tone. For example, do you think Wendy’s social team is using AI to write their witty comebacks? Definitely not.
3. AI writing tools don’t follow SEO guidelines.
Lastly, using AI to write content that will help you rank in Google searches simply won’t work. Google algorithms prioritize unique content. Unfortunately, AI writing tools are only able to pull in research from previously published sources.
Most of the time, AI writing tools produce generic content that needs TLC from a human writer – not only will this improve your chances of ranking in Google, but it will also connect you with the right audience. Humans > Robots
Now that we’re all clear on the pros and cons of using AI writing tools for copywriting, we can move on to how to use AI for copywriting.
AI is a powerful tool to supercharge copywriting and content-writing skills. Although AI is often used as a tool to write blogs, articles, or marketing content in its entirety, I recommend using it to brainstorm ideas, create rough drafts, and fine-tune your writing.
Below are my hacks for getting the most out of AI for copywriting:
Hack #1: Use AI to brainstorm a blog or article topic
But instead of simply asking your AI tool, “List 5 blog ideas for my copywriting website,” I recommend getting HYPER focused.
For example, take a detailed approach and say, “I want to create a new blog for my wellness copywriting brand targeting female business owners who want to create content faster. Please list content ideas.” Taking this route will force you to consider important details about your target audience, current trends, and interesting points of view (like industry myths, common misconceptions, etc.).
For reference, here’s an example of what you might see if you were to ask AI to list blog ideas for a copywriting website. Although these are perfectly viable ideas, they’re a tad basic and won’t differentiate your brand.
On the flip side, here’s what happens when you get specific in your AI requests with details on your target audience and content goals. The result is more specific topics that are more likely to relate to your target audience.
Hack #2: Use AI to whip out an outline quickly
If you’ve written a blog or article, you know that planning content with an outline can help you speed up the process immensely. If you have trouble organizing your thoughts, or can’t think of a logical way to lay out content, using AI to draft an outline is a game-changer.
To get started, choose a topic and ask your AI tool to write an outline for your blog, article, or whatever you’re writing. Once you have an AI-generated outline, take a look and see where you can elaborate and fill in the details.
Not only will this ensure a smooth writing process, but it’ll also help you remain organized and focused while you write.
Hack #3: Use AI to check for grammar, tone, and voice
Lastly, AI is an excellent tool to double-check your writing.
Although AI for copywriting has gained notoriety for drafting copy, it’s also done wonders for improving content quality. From tone to formality, AI can help you make sure your words sound like YOU. For example, AI can review your blog and adjust it so that it sounds like it’s being written to a friend, or by a New York Times journalist.
Without a doubt, AI technology is changing the way we create content, connect with customers, and promote our brands. It’s an immensely valuable writing tool to save time, improve copy, and produce more content. Nonetheless, organizations and small businesses should avoid relying too heavily on AI tools. At the end of the day, AI tools still do not have the ability to humanize brands or connect to audiences. Therefore, it’s crucial for marketers to proceed with caution when using AI for copywriting.
