When I started out as a freelance copywriter, I spent a LOT of time looking for the best writing apps. My Instagram feed was filled with experienced freelancers sharing copywriting tools and tricks. To say the least, it was overwhelming.
We live in the digital age where there is an app for everything.
Need to walk your dog? No problem, there’s a local dog walker within a half-mile radius.
Want a guided tour through the hills of Tuscany? Here’s an app so you can drive with ease.
Looking for the love of your life? Goodbye meet-cutes, you can daydream from the comfort of your couch.
But it turns out…there’s no replacement for writing good copy.
I know. It’s a controversial opinion with the introduction of AI copy tools and automated writing generators.
But it’s true. There is no proven copy software or robot YET. Or at least, none that infuse emotional language in the context of specific brands. But of course, if anyone knows of one…give me the inside scoop.
Until then, there are many wonderful tools available for you to use in your day-to-day life. Below I have listed the BEST writing apps for freelance copywriters.
Grammarly is the mother of all spell checks. It is a cloud-based typing assistant that reviews copy spelling and punctuation. Better yet, it provides feedback on clarity, tone, and engagement too.
Grammarly has a plug-in that you can seamlessly integrate into Google Docs or Office to use as you type. Pretty neat, right?
They have a free option that provides limited feedback. Or a premium upgrade if you’re looking for the works.
The Hemmingway App was specifically designed to improve the readability of your copy. It’s great for blogs, landing pages, or any long-form content.
You simply copy and paste your content into the app. Then, it uses a highlight feature that shows you if your sentences are too hard to read. Hemingway also provides recommendations on how to simplify your copy. For example, if there are less complex alternatives, it will provide a shorter word or phrase. Last, it strengthens your writing by indicating unnecessary adverbs and passive voice.
It is 100% free to use and even analyzes your copy to assign a grade level. Most individuals read at Grade 7 or below, so aim for this.
Another one of the best writing apps is Wordtune. Wordtune is powered by AI to rephrase sentences. It helps to make your writing more clear, more engaging, and more compelling.
You can add it as an extension to Chrome for free. Wordtune offers a basic plan that gives you up to 10 rewrites per day. There is also a premium option that allows you to have unlimited rewrites. The premium version lets you choose a preferred tone and sentence length. You can always change it to match your content piece.
I use Headline Studio by CoSchedule for every single one of my blogs. This tool analyzes your headline to boost engagement and skimmability. It reviews the word types, headline length, and clarity. Headline Studio provides you with an overall score and gives recommendations to optimize your headlines.
I use the free version but I’ve been tempted to upgrade to the premium option. The premium option gives specific word feedback to increase your score. It also provides SEO recommendations to help boost your ranking.
If you’re a freelance copywriter and not using Google Docs, I IMPLORE you to switch. All Google programs are beyond user-friendly and integrate easily with other programs. Google Sheets, Google Drive, Google Forms, and Google Mail are all must-haves. Especially for the freelancers out there.
Google Docs is great because it saves your content in the Cloud so you don’t run out of space on your computer. You can create and edit documents right from your web browser so you aren’t hassled with system upgrades. You can also share documents with clients and track changes seamlessly.
And of course, it’s FREE. What could be better?
Leave me a comment and let me know! I’m always looking to upgrade. And let’s face it- we can all benefit from a few tools that help make our lives easier.
NONE of these are replacements for copywriting. But these apps help level up your copy before your client reviews. And that’s the goal, right?
